Côte-d’Or 3D Vineyard Map
Every Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and communal village appellation on Burgundy’s Golden Slope, mapped to the vineyard in 3D.
The Côte-d’Or is a roughly 50-kilometer (31-mile) stretch of the most important, rare, and expensive vineyard land in Burgundy. The name is most often translated as the “Golden Slope,” though it may derive from Côte d’Orient, a reference to the predominantly eastern aspect that gives the slope its morning sun. Location matters here more than almost anywhere else in wine: Grand Cru vineyards typically occupy the mid-slope sweet spot, Premier Crus sit just above or below, and village-level land fills in around them. This map is among the most densely detailed on SommGeo, with every classified vineyard individually mapped and populated with producer data, prestige rankings, and taste profiles. Use the layer controls to isolate Grand Cru, Premier Cru, or village tiers, and the bookmarks to navigate between key communes and vineyard areas.

This is one of the most densely mapped 3D experiences on SommGeo. Every Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and communal village appellation on the Côte-d’Or is individually mapped with detailed popup data including producers, prestige, taste profile, and geographic context. The layer controls are essential: toggle between Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and village tiers to manage the complexity. The bookmarks are equally important, styled to fly you between different communes, vineyard groupings, and perspectives along the slope. Start with the bookmarks to orient yourself, then use layers to focus on a specific classification tier.

Key Regions in Focus
Côte de Nuits
The northern half of the Côte-d’Or runs from Marsannay south to Corgoloin, and this is where the greatest concentration of red Burgundy Grand Crus sits. The slope is narrow here, often just a few hundred meters wide, and the Grand Cru vineyards occupy the mid-slope band where drainage, sun exposure, optimal and soil depth converge. Gevrey-Chambertin alone holds nine Grand Crus, including Chambertin and Clos de Bèze. Further south, Vosne-Romanée contains Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg on a remarkably compact stretch of hillside. In 3D, the precision of these vineyard placements is visible: you can trace exactly where the slope steepens, where the soil changes, and why one parcel is Grand Cru while its neighbor is Premier Cru. The elevation profile tool is particularly useful here for measuring the narrow altitude bands these vineyards occupy.
Côte de Beaune
South of the Combe de Beaune, the slope widens and shifts orientation, and the balance tips from Pinot Noir dominance to include the world’s greatest Chardonnay sites. The hill of Corton, straddling Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, and Ladoix, is the only Grand Cru in the Côte de Beaune producing both red (Corton) and white (Corton-Charlemagne). Further south, the Montrachet vineyards sit on the slope between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, where Le Montrachet itself occupies a mid-slope position at roughly 250 to 270 meters (820 to 885 feet) with a gentle east-southeast aspect. The screenshot above shows this area in 3D, with Saint-Aubin’s vineyards tucked behind the hill. Volnay and Pommard, both Premier Cru-only communes (no Grand Crus), produce some of the Côte de Beaune’s finest reds. The bookmarks will guide you through these key areas.
