Romania PDOs 3D Wine Map
Dealu Mare, Cotnari, Murfatlar, Târnave, and Romania’s registered DOC-DOP appellations in full 3D terrain.
Romania is the sixth-largest wine producer in Europe by volume and fifth by vineyard area, and its PDO system (DOC-DOP) maps out the specific appellations where geography, climate, and grape variety intersect with legal designation. The Carpathian Mountains arc through the center of the country, creating a natural divide: warmer, south-facing slopes on the exterior, cooler elevated plateaus in Transylvania, continental plains to the east, and Black Sea maritime influence along the coast. Romania’s PDOs are scattered across all of these zones, and unlike some neighboring countries where PDO designations see limited use, these are the working appellations that appear on labels. This 3D Fast Map shows each registered PDO in the country.

Key PDOs in Focus
Dealu Mare
Dealu Mare (“The Great Hill”) sits on the southern foothills of the Carpathians in Muntenia, roughly 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Bucharest. The south-facing slopes catch full sun exposure, and the well-drained clay-limestone soils create conditions suited to red wine production. Fetească Neagră, Romania’s most distinctive indigenous red grape, reaches its fullest expression here, producing deeply colored wines with firm tannin and dark fruit character. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir are also widely planted. The Carpathian foothills provide shelter from northern cold air while the southerly aspect delivers the warmth needed for consistent ripening. Dealu Mare is the PDO most associated with premium Romanian reds.
Cotnari and the Northeast
In Romania’s northeast corner, Cotnari is one of the country’s oldest and most historically significant wine areas, with documented production dating to the 15th century. The climate here is continental with cold winters and warm summers, and the region is known for its sweet wines made from Grasa de Cotnari, an indigenous variety prone to noble rot in favorable autumns. Fetească Albă, Frâncușă, and Tămâioasă Românească round out the traditional varieties. The terrain is gently hilly, with vineyards on south-facing slopes at moderate elevations. Further south in Moldavia, PDOs like Huși and Odobești produce both whites and reds in a similar continental climate.
Murfatlar and Târnave
Murfatlar, near the Black Sea coast in Dobrogea, benefits from maritime moderation: warm summers tempered by sea breezes, mild autumns that extend the growing season, and calcareous soils. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Muscat Ottonel perform well here, and the late-harvest sweet wines from Murfatlar have a long reputation. On the opposite side of the country, Târnave sits in the heart of Transylvania on the elevated Transylvanian Plateau, between roughly 300 and 500 meters (984 and 1,640 ft). The cool climate and higher altitude make this a white wine zone: Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling produce fresh, aromatic styles. The 3D terrain shows the contrast clearly between the flat, coastal Murfatlar landscape and the elevated, enclosed Transylvanian basin.
