Step 1: Choose a map

Wine country or region ?

Pick the country or region your map should cover. Then choose 2D or 3D below.

2D or 3D ?

2D is the flat map: whole country, every appellation boundary and name, your pin with a label, and your property boundary. Loads fastest and works on every phone. 3D shows the terrain in relief for a smaller area, ideal for slopes, aspect and river valleys. In 3D the pin is a plain marker (no label text or boundary) and the map opens on the pin. Not every region has both.

Background ?

Terrain is a clean shaded-relief background that keeps the region colors easy to read. Imagery is satellite photography. 3D maps have one fixed background.

Step 2: Open the map on a region

Wine region or appellation ?

This list comes from the map itself, so every name on it will work. Pick one and the map opens zoomed to it. Leave it on “Whole map” to open at the default view.

Opening zoom ?

How close in the map is when it first loads on your website. Automatic fits the region you picked (or the appellation around your pin). Slide right to open closer in, centered on your pin if you have one.

Layers shown when the map opens ?

Tick the boundary layers you want visible when the map first loads on your site. Visitors can still switch layers on and off with the Layers button inside the map.

Longitude ?

Latitude

Exact coordinates to center on. Easiest way to get them: right-click a place in Google Maps and click the two numbers to copy them. Google shows latitude first, then longitude, so put them in the matching boxes. South and west are negative.

Zoom level (1 to 20) ?

How close in the map starts. 6 shows a whole country, 9 to 10 a wine region, 12 to 13 a single village and its vineyards.

Step 3: Optional pin

Place your pin ?

Adds one marker with a label, for example your winery or shop. Click the button below: the preview turns into a map with the same wine region boundaries, and you click the spot. You can also search a name or address first to jump there. Drag the marker to fine-tune. ArcGIS allows one pin per map, so if you have several locations, make one embed for each page.

Pin label (shown on the map) Label font ?

The label is drawn by the map itself, always visible, in navy. Pick the typeface that best matches your website.

Label color Pin icon (optional) ?

Paste the direct web address of a small PNG (about 32 by 32 pixels, transparent background) to use your own icon in place of the standard pin. It must open as a bare image when pasted into a browser tab. Note: with a custom icon the map opens zoomed to the pin.

Property boundary (optional) ?

Outline your estate or vineyard. Click “Draw boundary”: the big map opens, you click around the edge of the property (switch to Satellite to see the vines), and click the first point again or press Done to close it. It appears as a navy outline on the SommGeo map.

Your embed code ?

Paste this into your website where the map should appear. In most site builders that is an “HTML” or “Embed” block. Change the height number to suit your page. The SommGeo credit inside the map must stay visible.
