Turning Nine Years of Soil Science Into a Working Trade Tool

From Geological Survey to Sales Floor

In partnership with Hopscotch Season, SommGeo developed an interactive mapping of the Beaujolais region, translating the results of a nine-year geological study into a platform that trade professionals could actually use.

The work extended across all ten Beaujolais crus and the village appellations, visualizing the granites, schists, diorites, and blue stones that shape the wines of each cru. The platform was built as the cornerstone of a seminar series for wine professionals, and was designed from day one to function both as live event content and as an evergreen reference that participants could return to long after the tasting.

What the project proved out: dense geological data, presented on a 2D appellation map or in a PDF, tends to stay inside a narrow specialist audience. Delivered as an interactive platform that lets a trade buyer click a cru, fly to its terrain, and see the stone beneath it, the same information becomes a working sales and education tool. The client built an entire seminar series around it. Participants kept using it afterward.

From the Team That Commissioned the Work

Hopscotch Season collaborated with Greg Van Wagner and SommGeo on a comprehensive mapping of the Beaujolais region, which became the foundation for an in-depth seminar series for wine professionals. SommGeo proved to be a valuable and engaging tool for our planned content, not just for event day use but also as an evergreen resource for professionals afterwards. Having access to this type of cutting-edge tool was a unique angle we could provide to our client.

Greg is not only a high-level wine expert but also an incredibly collaborative and communicative partner. His ability to leverage technology for wine education is truly innovative and represents the future of how we engage with wine. As a speaker, Greg is articulate and dynamic. His unique combination of skills, developing content, running a platform of this scale, and excelling as a speaker, made working with him a standout experience. He was also a great team player, seamlessly integrating his expertise and the platform within a panel of speakers. I would highly recommend SommGeo to anyone seeking a modern approach to wine discovery and education; and Greg is a rare find in the industry and would be an asset to any role involving wine content development or presenting.
